“With this plant, we are setting a global benchmark for precision, automation and sustainability in switch production.”

Jan Furnival, Member of the Executive Board and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Vossloh

Client Overview

When Australia’s rail infrastructure leader, Vossloh, required a turnkey switch rail manufacturing facility in Bendigo, Victoria, a private property developer in Bendigo, turned to Entegra to make it happen.

The brief was complex. Entegra was engaged to deliver a facility that met the tenant’s specialised operational needs, while protecting and future-proofing the developer’s long-term investment.

Challenges

Vossloh’s former Castlemaine facilities were hampered by outdated layouts, limited capacity and frequent production stoppages. Each long-rail movement required full factory shutdowns to comply with safety protocols, resulting in significant inefficiencies.

As a market leader contributing to Australia’s major rail expansion projects, Vossloh needed to remain competitive and operationally efficient. To achieve this, they required a purpose-built facility designed to:

  • Increase production efficiency
  • Integrate automation and safety systems
  • Align with sustainability commitments
  • Support future growth and workforce expansion

Solution

Working in partnership with the two stakeholders, Entegra delivered a 6,786 m² purpose-built rail manufacturing facility with automation, safety and sustainability integral to the design.

The Bendigo-based plant features modern machinery, including 11 integrated overhead gantry cranes, installed to improve safety, efficiency and cost savings by automating heavy lifting and reducing manual labour.

Sustainability was also a core design principle. The facility is equipped with a 228-kilowatt rooftop solar system, demonstrating Vossloh’s unwavering commitment to environmentally responsible operations.

With capacity to manufacture up to 200 railroad turnouts annually, the new site enables faster, safer and more efficient production–strengthening Vossloh’s ability to support nationally significant infrastructure projects across Southern and Eastern Australia.

Entegra’s vertically integrated approach, from feasibility through to handover, delivered a high-quality outcome for both parties that was on time, to scope and within budget. Consulting with both parties ensured the needs and outcomes of each client were clear and informed every aspect of the design and build.

A very positive aspect to come out of the project was the three-way partnership between Vossloh, us and Entegra. The input we got from Entegra was a real asset in the project. They were experienced in what they were doing, and we were able to meet the client’s needs, whilst also adjusting the project to be more viable for us.” Private Property Developer.

Outcome

The new Bendigo facility has substantially increased Vossloh’s production capability. The 11 overhead gantry cranes increase capacity and mobility, while reducing bottlenecks. These, combined with the improved layout, allow the site to operate with 30–40% greater efficiency, improved safety and reduced operational downtime.

The incorporation of natural lighting created a bright, comfortable workplace. “The facilities are fantastic here. The environment is so much better. We wanted to be the employer of choice and that’s something we could never have achieved in Castlemaine”, emphasised Don Adelwohrer, Vossloh Bendigo Operation Manager.

This facility is a major milestone in Vossloh’s operations and positions the company to continue delivering critical rail infrastructure across Australia. Their involvement in Australia’s major rail projects, including the nation’s largest infrastructure, demonstrates the scale of their impact supplying metro, regional and mining rail systems nationwide.

For the developer, Entegra’s handling and delivery of the project has helped his business on a number of fronts, most importantly the tenant relationship and knowing that Entegra will provide support with anything else that may arise.

For the tenant, the upside is obvious, the stats listed below relating to advances in operational and design efficiencies are proof of the compelling initial business case.
