Client Overview:

Spicer Trading, the parent company of CQ Building Supplies, is a leading manufacturer of frames and trusses in Marlborough Queensland, with strong ties to the Bundaberg area and a reputation for quality and innovation.

Challenge:

The old facility was located on a floodplain, and faced frequent flooding and inefficiencies. Due to its fractured layout, the factory was lacking space and ill-equipped for robotics and a future with AI plant and equipment. CEO Chris Curtis remarked, “Every time it rains, we have to hold our breath.” A new, consolidated facility was essential to support growth and technological advancement.

Solution:

A larger factory with a front-end office on higher ground. Key features include:

  • 50-Metre Clear Span Design: “It’s a big clear span building, which is amazing—we could get 50 metres clear span. You don’t get that if you’ve got poles in the middle of buildings and the like, so we’re excited about that.”
  • Building Over an Existing Structure: Preserving previous investments.
  • Consolidated Operations for Enhanced Efficiency: Combines all activities under one roof, reducing manual handling and improving efficiency.
  • Enhanced Weather Protection: Re-located to higher ground, safeguarding operations from flooding and ensuring continuity in all conditions.

Outcome:

“We’ve been able to move stuff around until we get manufacturing flows correct.”
