Best Places to Visit in South Australia

Coober Pedy 

This opal mining town is like no place you have ever visited before. The temperature is so hot that many local people hang out underground. If you choose to visit this quirky town, there is a good chance that at least part of your accommodation will be underground too. 

Coober Pedy’s biggest claim to fame is that it was a location for the filming of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. So, if you are a movie fan, it’s definitely with a visit. 

Barossa Valley

Barossa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. It’s home to an array of different vineyards producing wines including Shiraz, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. 

There are plenty of accommodation options in this beautiful part of the country. So, you can spend a few days in the area, eating and drinking food and wine and enjoying the scenery. 

Kangaroo Island 

Kangaroo Island is a wildlife lovers paradise. You can see kangaroos, possums, echidnas and sea lions in their natural environment. There are also many different bird species to spot.

Hahndorf

Hahndorf was first home to German settlers in 1839. This makes it the oldest German settlement in the country that still exists. 

Although it’s in Australia, Hahndorf is reminiscent of traditional German towns. This makes it one of the more interesting places in South Australia. 

Second Valley Beach 

This secluded beach is in the Fleurieu Peninsula. It’s the ideal place for you to visit if you love snorkelling or scuba diving as there are many stunning sites to see, above and below the surface of the water. 
The western side of the beach is where the rocks and reef are located, so it’s where you should head if diving is your thing. The eastern part of the beach is more sandy and is an ideal location for swimming. 

Flinders Ranges

Flinders Ranges is the ideal place to start an exploration of Australia’s Outback. It’s a rugged and incredibly beautiful environment where you can immerse yourself in nature. 

The area is full of Aboriginal history. It’s also an area where you can take to a 4WD and explore the numerous tracks looking for local wildlife. If you love an adventure, you will love Flinders Ranges. 

Mount Osmond

This historic location was once a mining town and the structures remain. The mines go up through the hills that surround the town and some of the mine shafts are up to 60 feet deep. 

Today, Mount Osmond is the starting point for numerous different hiking and biking trails. You can take these trails to local attractions like Gully’s Falls and the Cleland Wildlife Park. There is also a popular golf course for fans of the sport. 

Port Elliot 

Port Elliot is an idyllic seaside town. It’s a popular holiday location due to its pristine beaches and the collection of shops and cafes that visitors can enjoy. 

You can find Port Elliot between Victor Harbor and Middleton and there are many different accommodation options for you to choose from. While you are in Port Elliot, you can spend time relaxing at one of the many local cafes. Alternatively, you can stroll along the beach or head off for a longer walk along one of the local coastal trails.
